The word Hokulea has its origin in Polynesia. Hokulea is known
to the peoples of this region as "The Star of Joy" or "The Star of Gladness".
To Hawaiian culture Arcturus is Hokulea, being the Zenith Star of Hawaii.
When i first saw the photograph of the Surfer used as the central image
in this painting, it spoke to me of the sheer Joy and Exhilaration of surfing.
It was Perfect for the vision of this painting i had so long ago.
The basic theme of this Painting is Surfing the Wave of Time. If You
remember the biggest wave you have ever Surfed and multiply it by about
5 million times You may begin to get a feel for the enormity of the Wave
that Humanity and all other species on the Planet at this time, are riding
.The Surfer is surrounded by images from 13 great time periods (Baktuns}
of the Mesoamerican Calendar. Each Baktun is 394 years long (144,000 days)
This period commenced in 3113 BC and ends in 2012 .In order for Humanity
to make this Wave it would appear imperative that We begin to embrace a
more right brain intuitive approach to Life incorporating more respect
for feminine based, ecologically sound approaches to living, respecting
and beginning to learn from all indigenous cultures their Wisdom with regards
to Life and Living on this Planet. .
The Surfer is symbolic of the re-emergence of the Divine Feminine
on this Planet. It is based on a photograph of that Spirited and Gorgeous
Soul who in this Incarnation was born into the name of Ashley Cheadle.
Ash is a Surfer presently working for Billabong as a Lifestyle Model. The
