Golden Sunrise
Seventies Surfing in Sri Lanka
Inspired by a number of seasons surfing the beautiful waves of Sri Lanka.
Early in 1977 after a year of travelling I finally found myself on a small
boat making the crossing from southern India to the Ancient and luxuriant
island of Lanka. One of its previous names had been Serendipity and how
true this proved to be for me. Within 24 hours on the island I had reconnected
with old friends from Australia who I had no idea were living and surfing
in this magic place. Only half a dozen surfers were living in Hikkaduwa
at this time and among them were my friends the Sands brothers and the
Sanotti brothers. Two of these guys had represented Queensland in the Australian
titles back in the early days of amateur surfing in Australia. They were
good friends and great surfers.
This painting is dedicated to the memory of Craig and Alan who have
both left this dimension.
Unforgettable Friends, Unforgettable Times, Unforgettable Island
I love you guys
