Generation of the Shaman's Flight
An Ode to the Woodstock Generation
We are what we are, in many ways products of our time and place in history.
For many in our generation (The Vietnam draft, Woodstock, Summer of Love,
Hendrix and the rainbow bridge) the journey of surfing has come to resemble
the path of the ancient shamans in tribal cultures. Flowing in harmony
with nature, healthy in body and spirit. Lucky enough to be part of the
first generation of surfers to travel to the East in search of Surf and
all the adventure it promised.Few were disappointed. This was the Morning
of the Earth, as surfers, when it all comes together and we are in the
zone we feel the warmth of the suns rays on our skin, the wind in our face,
the taste of salt in our mouths. We love the freedom and power of our carves,
the speed of our flight, the glide of our lifestyle, the pure joy of first
setting eyes on those perfect reefs, we hear the roar of the ocean, and
are grateful for the gift of the wave.We are surfers, locked deeply into
the crystalline depths of the ocean.
We are one tribe with its ancient Polynesian roots, millenium old, proudly
sharing a unique experience, the awesome return to our origins, the ocean.
Sunburnt and salt-encrusted we explore the potentials of play and adventure
in the the oceans of this planet.
As part of the flowers and beads generation we owe much to that surfer
of the Zuvuya, Dr Timothy Leary. Here are a few words from him in an interview
from Surfer magazine (January 1978) "Its perfectly logical to me
that surfing is the spiritual aesthetic style of the liberated self and
that's the model for the future"
