Temple of Nirvana
The entire physical creation exists in wave forms. Surfing is one of the
simplest, purest and most unforgettable ways to experience the true nature
and reality of the creation we inhabit.Whether you see surfing as sport,
yoga, lifestyle, artform, pure fun or a totally cosmic way to connect with
the essence of a divine creation, it really doesn't matter.Surfing's bigger
than all of us. The waves were here long before we arrived on the scene
and they will be here long after the curtain has come down for all of us.
In this painting I am attempting to portray life as I experience it.
Our time on earth is like a wave on the ocean, we rise from the depths,
travel a distance, reach the farther shore and are reabsorbed back into
the oceanic depths.
Life is surfing, surfing is life. It can become a path to reach and
fulfill our highest potentials. May surfing bring to all of us this gift.
The images in this work are the result of my many years travelling in
Nepal and India as well as Sri Lanka. At the top of the painting the Tibetan
Buddhist images represent the union of wisdom and compassion within our
psyches-something akin to the unexplainable peace one feels after a long
session in any surf. The Polynesian Gods of happiness at the bottom of
the painting represent my gratitude to the beautiful Polynesian race for
their gift of surfing to the planet and particularly the Maori of Aotearoa
who so lovingly and unconditionally embraced my spirit during my long stay
in those sacred islands throughout the nineteen eighties.
The huge wave represents our heart nature and the temple of Nirvana
viewed from within symbolises our consciousness with its eternal nature.
Everything outside the circle represents the passing delights of the
physical creation. The outer edges of the temple are in the shape of a
sand castle to symbolise the impermanence of this time on Earth.
